Another countrywide Doctors' strike was about to happen but High Court declares illegal

Doctors went on a go-slow at various public hospitals yesterday as fears of an all-out strike mounted. The High Court on Friday June 22, 2012 granted the government a temporary injunction, blocking the doctors’ nationwide strike that was due to start on Saturdays June 23, 2012.

The order followed an application filed by the Attorney General requesting the court to restrain the Medical Association of Tanzania and its members from calling or participating in the strike pending the determination of the dispute referred to the court from the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration.

Service at some hospitals was unusually sluggish, but medical staffs were quick to point out that the number of doctors on duty on weekends was usually smaller than on weekdays. Only a handful of doctors were on duty at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), where many patients complained that they had not been attended to by midday.
