Stephen Kiprotich becomes Uganda's second ever Olympic gold medallist after 40 years.

It was his country's first medal of the Games and came in the final event of the athletics programme.

Stephen Kiprotich, 23, Ugandan national, won the marathon in London's Great Games extravaganza in 2 h. 08 min. 01 sec. yesterday, ahead of two Kenyans.

Twice world gold medallist Abel Kirui was second ahead of compatriot and London marathon champion Wilson Kipsang.

Kipsang made an early break, splitting the field and passing through the halfway stage in 63 minutes 15 seconds. He was gradually reeled in and joined by Kiprotich and Kirui by the 30-km point in a three-man race for the gold.

“I was thinking that maybe the Kenyans would win, but I kept in touch,” the 23 year-old said. “So I decided to move. It is wonderful for my country, my family, my people, everybody in Uganda. I’m very happy.” With this stunning bolt from obscurity, “I was unknown, now I am known.” Kiprotich explained.

He has become the second Ugandan to win an Olympic gold medal after 40 years.

Congrats to Kiprotich!
