Chaos as students riot in Arusha

Riots rocked Arusha City yesterday after students protested against what they called lack of action over gross ‘injustices.’

The students of the Arusha Institute of Accountancy took to the streets yesterday after one of their colleagues was reportedly killed by thugs on Tuesday.

Efforts by Arusha regional commissioner, Mr Magesa Mulongo, to calm them down failed and police officers were forced to whisk him from the scene after the students persistently yelled and threw hard objects at him.

Clashes ensued after police officers tried to disperse the students and ended up with scores admitted to hospital with injuries and others, at least ten, arrested.

The Institute was yesterday closed indefinitely following the riots to allow for the situation to normalise and investigations into the chilly death, which sparked anger among the students, to continue.

The deceased, identified as Henry Koga, 22(pictured above left), met his death close to the gate of the college at 10pm on Tuesday when returning to the campus.

Circumstances surrounding his death are suspicious, and eye witnesses had said that he was stabbed following an argument with a ‘bodaboda’ driver.

Koga found bleeding profusely, but he died while he was being rushed to hospital.

So sad,May his soul rest in peace....Amen!
