Dar bus rapid transit system is about to happen
Sounds like the start of a joke, right? But that’s what happened recently in Dar es salaam, the commercial city in Tanzania.
The Government worked side by side with World Bank to develop a conceptual plan for a simple, yet innovative, bus rapid transit system.
The system is part of broad plans to overhaul the public transport network in Tanzania’s commercial capital and ease congestion especially in and around the city centre. Under the project provisions are also being made for pedestrians and improved on- and off-street parking. The project has funding from the World Bank.
Dar es Salaam could soon have speedy buses after the government paved the way for construction of the necessary infrastructure. The system includes 21 km of dedicated bus lanes and has been in the pipeline for several years.
Now the 18-m “bendy” buses purchased and they will be operational early this year. The country needs to start importing low sulphur fuel to power the vehicles before the system can go into operation.
When done right, systems have speeds and carrying capacity close to those of subway lines. After this, I'm sure Dar es salaam will no longer be a nightmare of traffic and pollution, but rather a vibrant commercial city.
