Facebook's oldest user, Edythe Kirchmaier celebrates her 106th birthday

Facebook oldest registered user Edythe Kirchmaier, clocks 106 years old today. Kirchmaier earned the distinction of being the social site’s oldest denizen in 2013 when her friends from the medical aid charity Direct Relief created a Facebook account for her on her 105th birthday.

Kirchmaier, is also California’s oldest licensed driver and the University of Chicago’s oldest living graduate, she entered her birth year as 1908 when she joined Facebook. It took the site’s engineers a month to verify her age and fix the glitch, something they’d never had to do before.

Been born into the world at the age of telegraphs and candle stick telephones, Kirchmaier said social media allows her to check in daily for her family and friends so she had to embraces social media. She’s also used her status to create awareness for volunteerism in general and Direct Relief in particular.

She has more than 45,000 friends on her personal Facebook page. The fan page that was set up for by Direct Relief last year now has almost 105,000 likes. Users can go to the page to donate to the charity and sign up for volunteer opportunities.
