Boko Haram raid kills dozens in Nigeria

Members of Islamist group Boko Haram believed to be behind the brutal attack in northeastern Nigeria on Sunday Feb 16.

Men dressed in military uniforms stormed the Christian farming village of Izghe, in Borno state, late Saturday, killing at least 106 people in an attack specifically targeted at male residents.

Chanting "Allah is great," the attackers gunned down dozens of villagers, before going door to door and killing anyone they found by slitting their throats, then they looted the village food stores, set houses on fire and made off with about 10 trucks and motorcycles.

Confirming the attack, Senator Ali Ndume said:
106 people, including an old woman, have been killed by the attackers, suspected to be Boko Haram gunmen. Sixty of the dead have been buried while the rest are awaiting burial.

Reports say the militants came with rocket propelled Grenade, AA-12 and other sophisticated weapons which scatters the body of its target. This is the main reason why the military personnel stationed in that area couldn't contain the situation leading to the death of the large number of people because they were armed with AK 47 rifles which were not as powerful as the ones the Boko Haram men came with. But this has been dismissed by the Director Army Public Relations, Brig Gen Olajide Laleye who said the army was well equipped for the battle and that they never retreated during the faceoff withe sect members.
Boko Haram, which claims to be fighting to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has killed several thousand people - Muslims and Christians - since it launched a campaign of mass violence in 2009.
