Former World 100m record holder Asafa Powell, banned for doping violation

Top sprinters and performance-enhancing drugs......too clumsy!

Former world-record holder in the 100 meters Asafa Powell, has been banned for 18 months for doping offences. The 31-year-old sprinter was banned after he tested positive for banned stimulant at Jamaica's national trials last June.

The disciplinary panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission announced on Thursday April 10th that Powell has been suspended from competition until December 2014.

He is eligible to return to competition on December 20 this year. He had long denied using performance-enhancing drugs and plans to appeal against the 'unjust' ban.

Powell broke the world record in the 100m to 9.74 seconds in 2008 before being out-shined the following year by countryman Usain Bolt.
