Oscar Pistorius accused of deliberately shooting girlfriend

Prosecutor gives Pistorius a hard time as he challenges his testimony!

Oscar Pistorius' three-day cross-examination reached a dramatic climax today as the world-famous athlete was accused of deliberately shooting his girlfriend through a toilet door as the couple talked and argued in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

Gerrie Nel, one of South Africa's top attorneys, challenged the double-amputee sprinter repeatedly as to why Miss Steenkamp failed to scream when she was shot four times.

Prosecutor Nel to Pistorius:
You knew that Reeva went behind the door and you shot at her. You shot at her knowing she was behind the door.

Did she scream at all whilst you shot her four times? Mr. Nel asked Oscar Pistorius Friday, the Blade Runner's fifth day on the witness stand.
The athlete fell silent, stiffly staring at some fixed point ahead, expressionless. The courtroom waited for his response. Then he responded in a crackling voice, directing his answer to Judge Thokozile Masipa.
No, my lady
Mr Nel asked.....
Are you sure? Are you sure, Mr. Pistorius, that Reeva Steenkamp did not scream after the first shot?.... Nel persisted. Are you, Mr. Pistorius?
Moments went by, without a word. Then Pistorius emitted a deep sigh of resignation, leaning back, dropping his shoulders into his chair, his face frozen, blank.

And then, Nel told the judge:
My lady, I'm giving him the witness time to console himself. He is distressed, I'll wait a bit.
Making an effort to compose himself, Pistorius straightened up. Taking a breath, he looked directly at Judge Masipa.

His voice tearful, tremulous, he struggled to enunciate the words.
My lady, at no point did Reeva shout out, or scream. I wish she let me know she was there; she did not do that.
Several people living nearby have testified to hearing a woman's terrified screams before and during a volley of shots.

However, the 27-year-old track star said that he may not have heard her cries because of his ears ringing from the first shot.

Mr Nel said it was beyond belief that 29-year-old law graduate and model Miss Steenkamp would have remained silent in the tiny cubicle with an armed Pistorius shouting and screaming in the adjoining bathroom.

He later followed up with his central accusation - that the couple had an argument and Steenkamp fled to the toilet pursued by Pistorius, who then shot her through the closed wooden door.

The prosecution says Pistorius killed the 29-year-old after an argument on February 14, 2013.

Pistorius denied the accusation, before the court adjourned until Monday morning.

Pistorius, who claims he shot Miss Steenkamp by mistake thinking she was a nighttime intruder behind a toilet door in his bathroom, faces life in prison if convicted of murder.
